Further evidence that “Astoria is getting hip”, this Northern Italian newcomer’s “charmingly rustic” interior and “tasty”, “Queens-priced” classics have locals labeling it “the best place to come around in a long time”; other pluses include sidewalk seating in summer and a “cozy” next-door lounge.

When entrepreneur Adnan Krilic opened this restaurant in 2002 -- an add-on to his red-hot Brick Bar -- he used found materials, like tin ceilings, exposed brick and old-door tables, for 'rustic chic.' This sense of whimsy is echoed in this Euro-modern bistro's mood and menu, from wine lists wrapped around old bottles to outside seating where heat lamps mitigate spring thaws and winter chills. The limited menu, meanwhile, segues from appetizers (octopus carpaccio) to dinners (black squid ink risotto) to desserts (chocolate bomb) with aplomb.
Meals always start with a sensuous olive tapenade. Handmade, made-to-order pasta, or chicken paillard, steak frites, sauteed salmon or duck breast come next. Weekend brunches, while limited, are similarly rich: One doesn't easily talk in superlatives about omelets, but you can here. Finally, don't forget the Brick bar, where liquid cool music reigns -- the perfect place for a date, crowd.

"The Brick Cafe, a charming restaurant, is a perfect example of a real European bistro, right down to the rustic interior and sophisticated menu which boasts very reasonable prices.
Entrepreneur Adnan Krilic owned the adjoining bar for five years but recently took over this ideal corner location on 31st Avenue and 33rd Street. Massive renovations, many done by Krilic himself, have created the cozy interior, which features exposed brick walls, restored tin ceilings, floors from wood that was salvaged from old farmhouses in upstate New York and tables hewn from salvaged doors. Antique mirrors and crocheted curtains on the French doors lend a warm and homey note to this fabulous café..."
